PLASTIC FREE : Tips to help reduce, reuse, recycle beyond your refillable water bottle and canvas bag!

Its JULY, officially PLASTIC FREE July, a month to raise awareness about plastic pollution.

Here’s how to take your commitment to using lesser plastic beyond the reusable water bottle and canvas bag.

In recent years, the fashion and beauty industries have come under scrutiny for their significant contribution to environmental pollution and waste generation, particularly in the form of plastic. However, a growing awareness of sustainability has led to the emergence of innovative solutions to tackle these issues. By implementing conscious practices and adopting alternative materials, both industries can make a positive impact on the environment. In this blog, we will explore effective strategies to reduce waste and promote the reuse of plastic within the fashion and beauty sectors.

At a time when new studies are highlighting the omnipresence of microplastic (plastic fragments smaller than 5 mm) in the air and oceans, with disastrous consequences for the environment and our health, it seems imperative to gradually change our habits and move towards a more environmentally-friendly approach. With new studies highlighting the omnipresence of microplastics in the air and oceans, with disastrous consequences for the environment and health, it seems imperative to gradually modify our habits in favor of a healthier lifestyle. Microplastics are now everywhere! You can find them in the air, water, food, rain… They are like ‘sponges’ for pollutants, containing stabilizers or chemical agents that are harmful to the health of living things. Every human being ingests or inhales the equivalent of a credit card’s worth of microplastics every week! GROSS.
Here are several tips to help you reduce while supporting the planet.
  • Embrace Sustainable Fashion: The fashion industry can make a substantial difference by shifting towards sustainable practices. Consider supporting brands that prioritize eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton, hemp, or recycled fabrics. Opt for clothing items that are durable, timeless, and made to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
  • Promote Circular Economy: The concept of a circular economy involves keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible. Brands can embrace this idea by offering repair and alteration services to extend the lifespan of garments. Additionally, consider participating in clothing swaps, second-hand shopping, or donating unwanted items to reduce waste and encourage reuse.

  • Explore Innovative Recycling Techniques: Plastic waste is a significant concern in the beauty industry due to packaging materials. Brands can adopt innovative recycling techniques to minimize their impact. One example is using post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) in packaging. This helps reduce the need for virgin plastic production while still maintaining product integrity.

  • Seek Sustainable Packaging Solutions: Beauty brands ( like we do at the BUZZ) can prioritize sustainable packaging options by using biodegradable or compostable materials. Alternatively, they can opt for refillable containers, encouraging customers to reuse the packaging rather than disposing of it. This approach reduces waste and promotes responsible consumption. We use recyclable glass, that you can literally remove the labels and reuse, refill, or recycle.
  • Support Innovative Initiatives: The fashion and beauty industries can actively support research and development initiatives focused on finding sustainable alternatives to plastic. By investing in innovative materials and technologies, these sectors can contribute to long-term solutions, such as biodegradable fibers, plant-based packaging, or bioengineered materials.
  • Educate and Engage Consumers: Raising awareness among consumers is crucial for fostering sustainable practices. Fashion and beauty brands can educate their customers about the environmental impact of plastic waste and encourage them to make conscious choices. This can be done through informative campaigns, social media platforms, and collaborations with environmental organizations.

Reducing waste and reusing plastic in the fashion and beauty industries is an essential step towards a more sustainable future. By embracing sustainable practices, promoting circular economy models, exploring recycling techniques, seeking eco-friendly packaging solutions, educating consumers, and supporting innovative initiatives, these industries can minimize their environmental footprint. Together, we can create a more sustainable and responsible fashion and beauty landscape, preserving our planet for future generations. Lets all try to do our part and share with our kids, family and friends who are the future.

Best,
